About HowToWriteABook.com
Why we built this, what we believe, and how we make money โ no mysteries.
Why We Built This
The internet is full of writing advice. Most of it is vague, repetitive, or buried under so many ads and email gates that it's barely usable. We built HowToWriteABook.com because we believed writers deserved a genuinely useful, free resource โ one that treats them as intelligent adults and doesn't waste their time.
Our guides are long because the subjects are complex. They're free because information shouldn't cost money when you're just trying to write your first novel. And they're honest because there's enough cheerleading writing advice out there โ writers need the truth, including the hard parts.
What We Believe
Talent matters, but it matters far less than practice and persistence. Most successful authors wrote badly for years before they wrote well. The craft is learnable.
Every piece of writing advice is subordinate to this: you have to finish. A finished imperfect novel beats an endlessly revised fragment. Get to 'The End.'
The best writing advice is specific: not 'be authentic' but 'write the scene you're afraid to write.' We try to give you the specific, actionable version.
First drafts are meant to be imperfect. The real work happens in revision. Understanding this removes a lot of the pressure from drafting.
Writing is solitary, but it doesn't have to be lonely. Beta readers, critique partners, and writing communities make your work better and make the journey more sustainable.
The writing 'rules' are distillations of what usually works. Learn them deeply enough to know when breaking them serves the story better.

We believe in radical transparency about monetization. HowToWriteABook.com earns money through:
- Affiliate links. When you click a link to a tool (like Scrivener or ProWritingAid) and make a purchase, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only link to tools we genuinely recommend.
